The Royal College of Art presents an exhibition of new art in ceramics and glass at Sir John Soane’s Museum. REFLECTION brings together ten students from the Royal College of Art’s acclaimed Ceramics and Glass course and offers a rare opportunity to see the site-specific responses of an emerging generation of applied artists.
Following a competitive selection, the chosen artists will show new works that respond to the architecture and collections of the Soane Museum. Curated by Signe Schjøth, Louis Thompson and Jack Tan, the exhibition reveals the unifying tone of this new generation of applied artists.
Absorbingly meditative, the works are embedded or disguised within the existing collection; they peek out, recede or exist in reflection. Taking in the Museum’s objects, spaces and narratives, the artists have turned their gaze to the subtle, the transient and the overlooked.
Inspired by ‘traces of things that have become invisible’, ‘stains left by human activities’ or ‘a mourner’s need to be haunted’, the works capture more than residual past presences. They engage the Museum, through the artists’ contemporary practices, with the future.
The exhibiting artists are Willem Van Landegham, Signe Schjøth, Shan Valla, Marie Torbensdatter Hermann, Louis Thompson, Katherine Morling, Hélène Uffren, Charlotte Sale, Brigit Connolly, Ben Ben Li.
Curated by Jack Tan, Louis Thompson and Signe Schjøth.
